Anthony Neely is a professional writer whose career reflects his lifelong enthusiasm for history, politics, economic growth and matters of faith. A year in Washington, DC (April 2021-22) as an Associate Producer at BNC (Black News Channel) suited his constant interest in global examples of Black excellence and innovation.
Neely served as press secretary and chief speechwriter for Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer (1996-2001), during a period of dramatic redevelopment and image improvement for
the city. He was also press secretary for Mayor Dave Bing (2012-13) as Detroit endured a Chapter 9 bankruptcy. Neely served the top officers and key executives of General Motors Corporation as a staff speechwriter (2004-2008).
During a decade of newspaper reporting, Neely covered small business and minority supplier development at the Detroit Free Press, commercial real estate at the
Minneapolis Star-Tribune and urban social issues at the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Anthony Neely is the co-author of Starting from Scratch: The Humble Beginnings of a Two Billion-Dollar Enterprise (Westbow Press, 2015), which is the epic memoir of John W. Barfield, a legendary entrepreneur who built the Bartech Group into one of the nation’s largest Black-owned businesses. In a related project, Neely collaborated with award-winning producer Clara Wilkerson on a documentary film about Barfield that aired on Detroit Public Television in 2015. Neely’s other books include The Activist Entrepreneur (Neely Media Group, 2013) a biography co-written with Walt Douglas, chairman of the historic Avis Ford dealership in Southfield, Mich.; and Justice on the Jersey Shore, (Archway Publishing, 2019) the story of civil rights champion Ermon Jones—by his daughter, Dr. Geneva Jones Williams.
"Over three decades, my experience has helped me develop
unique skills:
1st decade: As a newspaper reporter, I learned to respect people,
get the facts straight and recognize a good story.
2nd decade: As a speechwriter, I learned to speak in my client's voice and stay “on message.”
3rd decade: As a biographical ghostwriter, I learned to think about a person’s life as a three-act narrative, with major highs and lows—pretty much the way screenwriters think about movies and TV dramas."
